The Centre of Excellence is the foundation for the WAFL’s future and a key to the ongoing development of our great game in Western Australia. The aim is to ensure all players coming through the WA development system have exposure to opportunities that maximise their potential.

This initiative aims to deliver:

Higher quality WAFL players
Greater number of draftable players to the AFL
Highest standard of coaching and support staff
Higher quality of community level players
Higher quality of educated parents for future generations

The concept of WAFL Clubs as a “Centre of Excellence” for the District is the foundation of future growth and prosperity. It has been endorsed by the AFL, WAFC and all WAFL Boards. This model will continue to grow the game in Western Australia and find a synergy between the WAFL Club and its District.

NAB Auskick

The NAB AFL Auskick program provides boys and girls with a fun and safe Australian Football experience that serves as an introduction to a lifetime of involvement in the game. The program is not just about introducing children to Australian Football – it activates and develops within each child the desire for a healthy lifestyle and an association with our great game. This is achieved through activities and programs for individuals, small groups and teams, and aims to assist development of personal and social skills.

NAB AFL Auskick is a program managed by the local community for the community. Adults play an essential role, whether as parents, coaches, administrators or officials, in supporting junior football in Australia.

Children learn best by example. Therefore codes of conduct provide clear behavioural guidelines and promote a quality environment in which both the game and the participants can flourish.

Code of conduct – Parents and spectators

Encourage children to participate regardless of ability

Encourage participants to always play by the rules

Never ridicule mistakes or losses

Remember that participants learn best by example. Applaud good play by all teams

Never publicly disagree with officials. If you disagree, raise the issue privately through appropriate channels

Actively discourage racial abuse

Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches

Remember that participants play for fun and are not miniature professionals

Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players

Encourage players to accept the umpire's decisions

Demonstrate exemplary behaviour by not using foul language, or harassing players, coaches or officials

Smoking and the consumption of alcohol is unacceptable at junior sport

Code of conduct – Coaches and teachers

Be reasonable in your demands: consider young players' time, energy and enthusiasm levels

Avoid over-playing the talented players. The just 'average' players' need and deserve equal time. n Keep winning in perspective: maximise participation because children participate for fun and enjoyment

Stress safety: ensure that equipment and facilities are safe and appropriate for age and ability levels

Consider maturity levels: match up practice schedules, activities and degree of competition

Develop team respect: for opponents as well as for the judgement of officials and opposing coaches

Recognise the importance of injury: seek and follow the physician's advice concerning injured players

Keep informed: with sound principles of coaching and skill development, and development of children

Teach sporting behaviour: create opportunities to teach appropriate sports behaviour as well as basic skills

Get priorities right: ensure skill learning and appropriate behaviour are the priority over competition

Teach fair play: help children understand the responsibilities and implications of their freedom to choose between fair and unfair play

School Football

The school system has traditionally been the nursery for young students wanting to participate in Australian Football, Australia's most popular sport. The West Australian Football Commission and Australian Football League is committed to ensuring all Australians have the opportunity to participate in our great indigenous game and aims to facilitate appropriate school-based participation opportunities for all students (girls & boys) wishing to be involved, whether as a player, umpire or coach.

School Ambassador Program

The exciting AFL School Ambassador program was launched in 2004 by the Minister for Education and Director General at Patersons Stadium. Currently (1 June 2011) there are 1027 teachers have been inducted into the program.

"AFL School Ambassadors are teachers who are passionate about their Australian football. They commit to actively and positively promoting our great game in their school." - Colin West, General Manager, WAFC Development and Education.

AFL School Ambassadors are provided with a fully funded Professional Development Day and are supplied with the following:

Dipper drops in at South Fremantle

Two schools in the South Fremantle District were lucky enough to have AFL legend and AFL Auskick Ambassador Robert ‘Dipper’ Dipierdomenico come and spread some footy magic with some lucky students and teachers.

Beeliar Primary School and South Coogee Primary School both played host to the Hawthorn Brownlow Medallist, who was in WA to promote the nation- wide AFL Auskick programme, which is aimed at young footy stars aged between five and eight.

Filled with enthusiasm, Dipper, as he affectionately known from his playing days, educated the kids on the Auskick programme before taking them out in the sunshine for a mini-footy clinic. The two schools are holding their own after-school Auskick programmes in partnership with the South Fremantle DFDC and with support from local company Cockburn Cement.

‘That’s the great thing about the programme’, South Fremantle Development Officer Lou McKenry said. ‘It’s easy to run, gets kids of all skill levels involved and can be conducted at schools, footy clubs, anywhere really’.

‘It offers a safe, fun environment for kids to learn skills, play with their friends and exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle’.

Beeliar PS teacher and AFL School Ambassador Narelle Scott says the programme has been well-received at her school.

‘We have a lot of footy-mad kids here, so they are really looking forward to having an Auskick program held here’ she said.

‘It’s also easy for parents as it’s held at the school ground’.

Hello to all Players, Stakeholders & Volunteers and welcome to 2011 Junior Football Season.

I would like to introduce myself to all Stakeholders within the South Fremantle District that do not know the role that I undertake within the District.

My name is Shane Harding and I am the South Fremantle District Junior Competition Director who oversees the completion from Y4’s through to Under 17’s with the fantastic support from a group off hard working and dedicated volunteers who spend countless hours during the season and during the off season dedicated to junior football.

There are some critical parts of junior football that we focus on to make sure that all players and volunteers enjoy the game and their time devoted to junior football. Listed below are some critical parts of the game that the South Fremantle District Football Development Council focuses to provide a quality environment and positive experience for all stakeholders within the District

1) Quality coach’s within the District.
2) Educating & mentoring of coaches & club delegates and committees.
3) Club development.
4) Facilities for clubs.
5) Quality & positive environment where all stakeholders enjoy the game.
6) Player retainment and development of all players’ skills.
7)Equal playing time for all players.
8) Growing the game.
9) Female and multicultural involvement within the game.
10) Umpire recruitment & retainment.
11) Mentoring and educating umpires.

The SFDFDC has been considered by many stakeholders within junior football as a District that leads the way in developing the game and growing the game through various strategies and ideas to enhance the game for all stakeholders.

There are some important dates that are coming up in the near future to prepare the District for the 2011 season and they are listed below.

1) 18th March Team nominations to be in.
2) 20 March drafting of 2011 season fixtures.
3) 30th March 2011 season launch.
I would like to wish all players, stakeholders and volunteers the best for the 2011 junior football season.

14/15s WAFL Development Carnival Wrap up

The SF "Warriors 14/15s Development squads complete Carnival programme, The WAFL 14/15s Development programme has concluded with all WAFL teams playing against eachother over a period of two weeks that started late September and concluding on the 11th Of October.

The SF Warriors competed against opposition from Subiaco, Swans , West Perth , Peel, & East Fremantle, our squads played a greart brand of football and we had some oustanding performers in all grades.

The carnival was completed at Swans on Suday the 11th of October and we awarded four players a medal, one in each age group as best player fro the carnival. 15s early Birthdays "Mollica Medal" Steve Rasmussen, 15s late Birthdays "Mollica Medal" Sam Lowry, 14s early "Dawson Medal" Tim Stewart, 14s late"Dawson Medal Ben Sokol. These four players were consistent performers and showed real quality throughout the carnival.

The coaches and support staff have all worked very hard to provide quality care and coaching to our players, and the parents of all players are to be commended on the effort to meet all the demands of our programme. The SFFC provides our development programme with funds and valued support in the form of coaching direction and opportunity to develop our players to play at a higher level. Our SF Warriors committee led by Mr Peter O'Neill have to be congratulated on their efforts towards providing our programme with sponsors and effective support.

Well done to all the players and coaches who competed, and the SFFC can be very confident with regard to the development and quality of football that was evident over the whole carnival and throughout our development programme. Well done to all invovled and thankyou to all the parents and people who assisted the development programme over the year.

SF "Warriors " 14/15s Carnival update

South Fremantle 14/15s Development squads performing well, The SF "Warriors development squads are currently playing as part of the WAFL 14/15s development programme, after 3 rounds our teams have shown great promise and are playing an exciting brand of football. All staff and coaches have worked very hard to get the players and the groups up and running.

The volunteers, and all our Staff including the coaches are to be congratulated on their efforts so far, we have played three rounds and will be at home to Peel Thunder on Thursday the 8th of October, with our final game to be played on Sunday the 11th of October at Steel Blue Stadium against Swans.

The carnival Best player awards will be presented at Steel blue after each team has completed their respective matches, (Mollica & Dawson family medals) all members are encouraged to come down to support the players of the future, games start from 10:00am through to 6pm on the dates above.

To all the Sponsors and parents of our players thankyou for your support and the effort to provide this opportunity to each of the players, good luck to all the teams.

South Fremantle Women's FC 2009 Premiers!!

South Fremantle Bulldogs, coached by former AFL player Scott Chisholm, claimed their first premiership title in Division 2 following a replay of the 2007 grand final.
Eftel Oval was awash with red and white as the Bulldogs overcame the Joondalup Falcons in a closely contested game with the lead changing hands several times.

South Fremantle pulled away in the final quarter with Chae-Lee Salbie and Jess Aspinall (three goals) proving too agile in front of goals, to claim the win.
Joondalup received great service from Laura Schelfhout in the ruck but when she was rested, South Fremantle gained the ascendency in the midfield and at stoppages.

Despite the best efforts of Tammy Mort and Sabrina Moro to give Joondalup the advantage, they could not overcome the relentless chasing and tackling of the South Fremantle girls.

Emilee Chamberlain topped a memorable day for the Bulldogs, claiming the medal for Fairest and Best on the ground.
