Cockburn Autumn AFL 9's Competition

Tuesday, July 4, 2017 - 11:48 AM

Over the last ten weeks, four teams have played at Anning Park in South Lake for the Autumn AFL 9's Competition. Monday the 3rd of July was the last week of the competition with The Slippery Gypsies and Farmer wants a Fyfe fighting off for the title of Cockburn AFL 9's Autumn Champions; on the other field was the South Metro Stallions and the Kumas fighting it out for third and fourth.

The South Metro Stallions in their debut season had a rough season but always came back each week stronger and more confident. Unfortunately, they went 0-9 into the last week of the competition, but all their hard work paid off when they were able to beat the Kumas in a thrilling match. The South Metro Stallions kicked 10.6 - 66 to the Kumas 10.5 - 65.

The main match of the night was between the Slippery Gypsies and Farmer Wants a Fyfe. The Slippery Gypsies as well in their first season went into the game as the favourites with a convincing record of 8-1 approaching the final game, with their only loss being against Farmer Wants a Fyfe in their last meeting. At half time of the Championship match, the Slippery Gypsies were in the lead by a few goals. The game wasn't over yet as throughout the year it was evident that the Slippery Gypsies would get off to a flying start then slowdown in the last half where the Farmer Wants a Fyfe boys were the opposite as they would finish strong rather than starting off strong. This match was no different as Farmer Wants a Fyfe made a convincing comeback in the last half but unfortunately it was not enough as Slippery Gypsies were able to hold off with the final score being 7.6 - 48 to Farmer Wants a Fyfe 4.2 - 26.

It was a fantastic way to finish the Autumn Season with two great contests. The next AFL 9's season will begin on the 17th of July at Anning Park. Is anyone going to knock off the reigning champions in the Slippery Gypsies? Stay tuned until next season to find out!
